Water Polo Tactical Rubric — U10

Coach-grade Tactical rubric for U10 water polo: 4 sub-skills, sideline-visible 3/5/7/9 anchors covering off-ball movement, ball decisions, defense, and transition.

60-second quick start

Use this rubric on the sideline today

  1. 1Watch one full offensive possession before rating anyone — a single goal or turnover tells you almost nothing about tactical decisions.
  2. 2Position yourself to see the far side of the pool, not just the ball — most off-ball tactics happen away from where everyone is looking.
  3. 3Pick one player and track only their off-ball movement for two full minutes before switching your focus.
  4. 4On any turnover, decide whether it was a decision problem (bad read) or a technical problem (bad catch/throw) before you rate it.
  5. 5Score transition/counterattack off a turnover separately from settled offense — they're different tactical moments and kids often split hard on the two.
The rubric

Rate each sub-skill 1–10

Anchors describe what a 3, 5, 7, or 9 looks like in practice. Use the anchor that matches what you saw — interpolate to 4/6/8 when the player sits between two anchors. A 1 or 10 should be rare.

Off-ball positioning & driving

Sub-skill

Holding useful space away from the ball and timing drives into open water instead of chasing the pack.

3
Follows the ball around the pool in a tight cluster with teammates, rarely more than a body length from the pack on either end.
5
Holds a spread position on the perimeter for most of the possession and drives toward open water when a teammate has the ball, though spacing collapses once a defender presses in.
7
Keeps width, clears out after a drive so the lane stays open for a teammate, and starts a second drive when the first one gets shut off.
9
Checks the defender's hip angle and the goalie's position before committing to a drive, timing the cut so a teammate can see and deliver a pass to open water on nearly every attempt.

Decision-making with the ball

Sub-skill

Choosing to pass, drive, or shoot based on who and what is actually open, not just reacting.

3
Shoots or throws toward the goal on almost every touch regardless of distance or defender, or freezes holding the ball until it's stripped.
5
Passes to a teammate who is obviously more open or closer to the goal, but still forces a low-percentage shot the moment a defender gets within an arm's length.
7
Looks around before or right after catching and chooses the open teammate or a clear driving lane over a contested shot on most possessions.
9
Draws a defender in before releasing a pass to the teammate that move opened up, and recognizes a 2-on-1 or an empty cage in real time, not after the play has passed.

Defensive positioning & pressing

Sub-skill

Staying attached to an assigned attacker and cutting off the pass, not just chasing the ball.

3
Loses track of the assigned attacker and drifts toward wherever the ball is, leaving their own player open in front of the goal.
5
Stays within an arm's length of the assigned attacker near the goal, but loses contact once that attacker swims away from the ball.
7
Keeps their body between the attacker and the goal and shifts to help pressure the ball-side driver without fully abandoning their own matchup.
9
Anticipates the pass and gets a hand into the passing lane before the ball arrives, then recovers back to position right after the contest instead of chasing the deflection.

Counterattack & transition

Sub-skill

Recognizing a turnover the instant it happens and pushing to the open goal, or sprinting back to cover.

3
Keeps swimming toward the ball or drifts in place after a turnover, arriving to the play well behind everyone else on both ends.
5
Turns and sprints toward the open goal right after a teammate's steal, or gets back on defense after their own turnover, most of the time but not every time.
7
Releases early into an outside lane on a turnover to beat the defense down the pool and calls for the ball in open water.
9
Reads the turnover before the whistle even sounds and is already sprinting to a lane, finishing or setting up an odd-man break almost every time it happens.
Age context

What's developmentally appropriate at U10

Normal range
A normal U10 spreads to the perimeter and drives to open water when nobody is guarding closely, but the moment a defender leans in, that spacing collapses and everyone drifts back toward the ball.
Exceptional
An exceptional U10 reads a defender's hip angle before committing to a drive and already looks for the second pass, tactical patience most 10-year-olds in the pool don't have yet.
Behind
A player behind for U10 is still part of the swarm — swimming straight at the ball on every possession, offense or defense, with no sense of holding a spot in the water.
Common pitfalls

Rating biases to watch for

  • Rating a big goal-scorer high on Tactical because they finish, when the goal was a Technical shot off a bad decision (forced from a bad angle) — that's a shooting mechanics credit, not a decision-making one.
  • Docking a strong swimmer for 'bad positioning' when they're actually just faster than the pack and outrunning their own spacing — that's a Physical trait bleeding into the Tactical score.
  • Over-crediting the loud kid who yells for the ball constantly but never actually relocates in the water — vocal presence isn't off-ball movement.
  • Defaulting everyone to a 5 because the swarm makes off-ball behavior hard to see — you have to watch a player away from the ball for a full possession, not just where the ball goes.
  • Punishing a passer for turnovers that were really a catching/technical problem on the receiving end — check who mishandled it before scoring the passer's decision-making down.
Coach-to-parent notes

What to write in your evaluation

A rating without a note is half a rating. Use these phrasing templates so the parent reads a story, not a number.

  • low rating

"Mila still swims straight into the pack chasing the ball on both ends — we're doing 'find your water' drills so she learns to hold a spot instead of following the crowd."

  • mid rating

"Jonah finds the open teammate when it's an easy read, and we're using Vimasu notes to see whether that holds up once a defender starts pressuring him."

  • high rating

"Ava reads the defender's hips before she drives and gets open water almost every time down there — she's ready for a set play, not just spread-and-cut."

Honest scope

What this rubric does NOT measure

  • Eggbeater kick strength and stroke mechanics in the water (Physical)
  • Shot power, wrist snap, and passing/catching technique (Technical)
  • Sprint speed and stamina across a full quarter (Physical)
  • Coachability, response to a bad call, and effort after a mistake (Mental)
Frequently asked

Questions parents and coaches ask

What changed from the younger age band?
At U8, tactical credit mostly goes to a kid who finds their own space in the pool at all. At U10 we expect deliberate spacing, driving to open water, and passing to an obviously open teammate when unpressured — decisions under real pressure are still just emerging.
Does a 7 last season mean a 7 this season?
No. Anchors are age-relative and the bar rises every season. A player whose game stays identical while peers develop can drop from a 7 to a 5 with no change in their own play — that's the band moving, not the player regressing.
Should I fold in other-pillar notes?
No. Keep tactical ratings to decisions and positioning only. A strong shot or fast swim is Technical or Physical — mixing them into a Tactical note makes the rating meaningless for comparing across players or seasons.
How often should I re-rate tactical?
Every 4-6 weeks of games or scrimmages. Rating off a single possession just captures noise; Vimasu's season view is built to show the real trend once you've logged a few sessions, not one good or bad game.
