Beep test scores by age: what the number actually measures

The 20m multi-stage fitness test explained — the protocol that makes a level comparable, the reference source behind each age band, and why a beep test score is a poor way to compare two children and a good way to compare one child to themselves.

What this page will not tell you

It will not print percentile numbers. What the test actually measures

The beep test measures aerobic capacity — the body’s ability to keep supplying oxygen to working muscle as intensity rises. An athlete runs back and forth between two lines 20 metres apart, timed by an audio cue, and the cue gets faster every minute. The test ends when they fail to reach the line in time twice.

What is recorded is a level and shuttle, which is then commonly converted to an estimated VO₂max. That conversion is an estimate from a regression equation, not a measurement, and the estimate carries more error in children than in adults. If a coach reports a beep test result as a VO₂max figure to two decimal places, the decimals are decoration.

The protocol, and why it decides whether the number means anything

Almost everything that makes beep test scores incomparable is procedural, and almost all of it is fixable.

Same surface, same shoes, same place. A firm indoor floor and a soft wet field produce materially different scores from the same athlete. If you test on grass in September and indoors in February, you have measured the venue.

Same audio source, checked. Beep test recordings circulate in versions with different starting speeds and different increments. Two clubs using two recordings are running two different tests with the same name.

Account for the practice effect. The first time a child does a beep test they pace it badly — usually too fast — and the second attempt improves without any change in fitness. A first-ever score is a familiarisation, not a baseline.

Record the conditions, not just the number. Temperature, time of day, and what the athlete did in the ninety minutes before all move the result. A number without its conditions cannot be compared to anything later.

Where the reference comes from

U10, U12, U14, U16, U18 resolve against FITNESSGRAM Healthy Fitness Zone (Cooper Institute). Source populations run from 142,000 to 178,000 across those bands. What the number does not tell you

It is a maximal test of willingness as much as capacity. The test ends when an athlete stops, and children stop for reasons that have nothing to do with their cardiovascular system — a fear of being last, a bad day, a friend who stopped first. Two children with identical aerobic capacity can finish four levels apart.

It does not measure the fitness most field sports actually need. Sport is repeated hard efforts with incomplete recovery, not a smooth ramp to exhaustion. That is the specific gap the Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery test was designed to close, and why it is often the more informative choice for soccer, hockey and similar sports.

Maturation dominates the picture in the U12 to U15 window. Within a single age band, an early-maturing child will usually outscore a late-maturing one regardless of training, and the gap closes on its own. Age-referenced bands correct for chronological age; they do not correct for biological age, which is a different and larger effect.

Is a higher beep test level always better?
Better than the same athlete’s previous score, yes — that is the comparison the test supports well. Better than another child’s score, not reliably. Differences between two children of the same age are frequently explained by maturation, familiarity with the test, and how each one felt about stopping, rather than by aerobic capacity.
What is a good beep test score for a 14-year-old?
We deliberately do not publish a number, because every reference band behind our percentiles is currently marked sourced-but-pending-audit, and a figure a parent might act on is the wrong place to be approximately right. The more useful framing is that a good score is one that improves against the same athlete’s previous test under the same conditions.
Should we use the beep test or the Yo-Yo test?
If the sport involves repeated sprints with partial recovery — soccer, hockey, lacrosse, basketball — the Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery test is closer to the demand and usually more informative. The beep test’s advantages are that it needs no equipment beyond a speaker and 20 metres, and that almost every coach already knows how to run it.
