The 5-10-5 shuttle: change of direction, measured
The pro agility shuttle in youth testing — what the two direction changes actually measure, why left and right should be recorded separately, the reference source per age band, and the one age band where our source is not documented.
It will not print percentile numbers. Every reference band behind Vimasu is currently marked sourced, pending audit — cross-checked against the original publication is a step we have not finished, and a number a parent might act on is the wrong place to be approximately right. What follows is the protocol, the named source behind each age band, and what the result does and does not mean. The full methodology and source bibliography sits one level up.
What the test actually measures
The 5-10-5 measures change of direction speed — specifically, how efficiently an athlete decelerates, plants, reverses and re-accelerates. Two direction changes are packed into roughly four to six seconds, which is why a small technical improvement shows up clearly in the total time.
It captures something a straight sprint cannot: the cost of stopping. Athletes who accelerate well but decelerate poorly lose disproportionate time here, and that profile is both common and coachable.
The protocol, and why it decides whether the number means anything
Record left and right separately, and keep both. An athlete starts by going to one side; most have a clearly better side, and the asymmetry is often the most useful information the test produces. Averaging the two throws it away.
Enforce the line touch with the hand. As with the T-test, an athlete who does not touch has run a shorter course. This is the single most common way shuttle data becomes worthless.
Start on the athlete’s own movement, not a whistle, so reaction time is excluded from a test that is about mechanics.
Surface and footwear matter more than in any straight-line test, because the entire result hinges on planting without slipping. Test on the same surface every time, and never compare a court time to a grass time.

Every band above is currently flagged sourced, pending audit — the source is named and the values are in place, but our cross-check against the original publication is not finished. That is why this page names sources and populations rather than printing percentile numbers. What the number does not tell you
Our U10 reference is not currently documented. For U12 through U18 the bands resolve against a published NSCA source with populations in the thousands; the U10 band resolves against an internal reference that does not yet appear in our source bibliography. Until it does, we would not lean on a U10 percentile from this test. The published bands are unaffected.
It is pre-planned, so it is not agility in the sporting sense. The athlete knows where they are going. Reactive change of direction — responding to an opponent — is a different and largely uncorrelated quality.
The U18 reference is male-only. Female athletes in that band are compared against a male distribution, which is a limitation worth knowing before reading anything into the percentile.
Questions parents and coaches ask
- Why record left and right separately?
- Because the difference between them is often the finding. A substantial asymmetry between turning directions is common, visible in the data, and directly actionable in training. Recording only the better time, or an average, discards the most useful thing the test produces.
- Is the 5-10-5 the same as the pro agility drill?
- Yes — the same test under two names, along with "20-yard shuttle". Total distance is 20 yards with two direction changes. Because the names are used interchangeably, record the protocol alongside the result so a future comparison is unambiguous.
- Should we test U10 athletes with this?
- You can run it, and the protocol is age-appropriate, but be aware that our U10 reference band currently resolves against a source not yet in our published bibliography. Treat a U10 result as a baseline to repeat against rather than as a percentile to act on.
Testing is only worth it if the numbers go somewhere.
