The 20m sprint: the most useful speed test in youth sport
Why 20 metres is the distance worth testing in youth sport, how timing method changes the number more than the athlete does, the reference source behind each age band, and what a sprint time cannot tell you.

What the test actually measures
The 20m sprint measures acceleration — the ability to change from stationary to fast in the distance where most sport actually happens. Very few youth athletes reach their maximum velocity within 20 metres, so this is not a top-speed test and should not be described as one.
It is the distance most worth having if a club is only going to run one sprint test, because sporting sprints are overwhelmingly short. A player who is quick over 20 metres is quick in the situations that recur; a player who is quick over 60 is quick in situations that arise a handful of times a season.
The protocol, and why it decides whether the number means anything
Timing method is the whole ball game. A hand-held stopwatch systematically reads faster than electronic timing gates, because a human starts the watch late and stops it early — and the size of that bias is comparable to a year of genuine improvement. Never compare a stopwatch time to a gated time.
Fix the start. Standing start, front foot on a line, no rocking, and no starting on a coach’s voice if the timing is gated on a beam break. Any variation in the start is time added or removed before the athlete has done anything.
Full recovery between attempts. Two to three minutes. A second sprint taken thirty seconds after the first is a repeated-sprint test, not a speed test.
Same footwear and surface, for the same reason as every other test on this site: you are trying to measure the athlete rather than the day.
Where the reference comes from
U10, U12, U14, U16, U18 resolve against Tomkinson et al. 2017. Source populations run from 82,000 to 102,000 across those bands. Bands are held separately for male and female athletes. What the number does not tell you
It measures sprinting in a straight line from a standing start, which is rare in sport. Most sporting acceleration begins from a rolling start, a turn, or a reaction to something. A quick 20m time is genuinely useful information; it is not the same as being quick in a game.
Reaction and decision are excluded by design. The test starts when the athlete chooses to start. A player who is fast but reads the game late arrives after a slower player who read it early, and no sprint test will show you that.
Maturation again dominates within an age band. In the U12 to U15 range, the taller, more mature athlete usually posts the better time, and the difference frequently narrows or disappears within two years.
Questions parents and coaches ask
- Is 20m better than 10m or 30m for youth athletes?
- For a single test, yes, in most team sports — 20 metres captures the acceleration phase where the majority of sporting sprints live. A 10m split adds useful detail about the first steps, and 30m starts to bring in top-speed qualities that fewer youth athletes are expressing.
- Can we use a stopwatch?
- You can, as long as you never compare those times to electronically gated times and you accept that between-athlete comparisons carry substantial error. Hand timing reads systematically faster than gate timing. Consistency within a club is achievable; comparability across clubs is not.
- Why did a player get slower over the summer?
- Growth is the usual answer. A rapid growth spurt temporarily disrupts coordination and can genuinely slow an athlete for a period before they reorganise around their new body. It is a well-recognised phase, not a training failure, and it resolves.
Testing is only worth it if the numbers go somewhere.
